Cable House, history and art in the port of Javea
The first connection of Telegraph between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands took place in 1860. After several studies, it had been decided that the Javea Bay was the most suitable to accommodate the telegraph station. On the other side, the Cove of Port Roig in the municipality of Ibiza in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, was the place chosen to locate the other end. To carry out this project of communication – very novel then in Spain before only had tested between Tarifa and Ceuta - in Javea was required the construction of a new building by the sea, in the area of customs, the current port.
The building was almost immediately christened with the name of the wire House. From there he left the submarine cable of 113 km which traversed the Mediterranean until you reach Port Roig depths. Thus was born a network of communication and information by the Mediterranean that placed Jávea map partly breaking its traditional isolation.
More than one century later and due to their situation of abandonment, the City Council decided to restore the House of Cable into one of the most special exhibitions from all over the Mediterranean. The show see the horizon from the inside is repeated in very few places. It is virtually unique.
The House is currently open and held exhibitions on a regular basis. It is an ideal place for art lovers but also for those who love discovering a unique space.
